From the sleeve notes:

Many years ago I was about to retire for the evening when my friend Laurie Holloway called and invited me down to his place. We live about 500 yards apart. I said I was heading for my bed. He said you wouldn't want to miss this. Intrigued I walked down the road, knocked on the door which was opened by Gerry Mulligan.

This would have been sufficient to make my night. However, further joys awaited. In the music room Laurie sat at the piano with Marion, who was singing Johnny Mercer. Not only that she was actually standing next to the man. I pinched myself to make sure I hadn't died and gone to heaven.

Listening to this album the memories came flooding back. Marion was not only a friend of Mercer, she was also one of the best interpreters of his songs. Don't ask me to explain the affinity. Maybe it's geographical, maybe it's simply the collusion of two great musical talents, or maybe it was a musical marriage made in heaven.

Who knows. Who cares. What matters is the quality of the music they left behind. Never better demonstrated than on this collection. Great songs performed by a marvellous singer.
