The title track was inspired by the howl-like tones he developed by running synths through guitar pedals. obc I discover Rival Console with this great album. The Leicester-born, London-based producer who makes music as Rival Consoles tweeted in protest of the ongoing boom of deep house, asking artists to quit contributing to the genre, currently in vogue. There's probably enough to last us till 2089, he wrote. West's ire makes sense, if only because the music he makes as Rival Consoles feels diametrically opposed to the luxuriant, lengthy bath evoked by deep house. Howl finds Rival Consoles limiting his palette in order to creatively push himself, resulting in what is easily his most cohesive, expressive full-length to date. Rival Consoles - Howl review: Howl comes from nowhere and goes someplace similar. Ryan West really did call the wrong track Howl , though, and its annoying enough to focus on. Howl is a relatively stock example of recent Rival Consoles material, which means the kind of pulse-heavy, visceral electronic aesthetic of Jon-you-know-who with a little more rhythm and a whole lot less melody. It fits him into a small group of barely group-able UK producers who, despite sharing similar, almost-experimental trappings, are utterly detached from any tangible scene in particular.
