Alive & Well In Argentina - Zal Yanovsky. After parting ways with the Lovin' Spoonful in 1967, co-founder Zalman Yanovsky - better known to fans and friends simply as Zally - surfaced the following year on his lone solo long-player Alive and Well in Argentina 1968. The effort returned the artist back to the early rock as well as country & western roots that had inspired him. Raven In a Cage. 2: And Well in Argentina was crafted by Zally and his Spoonful replacement Jerry Yester as almost a deconstruction of Pop, with odd covers of boyhood favorites and Zappa-esque malarkey jostling with Folk-Pop gems. A surreal composite of Psychedelic Pop and wry piss-taking, it remains a vital artifact of it's time and place. Simply put, this is not a good album. Zal's goofy persona may have worked well in the Lovin' Spoonful but he falls flat here. The dreary covers of You Talk Too Much and Little Bitty Pretty One do not help nor do the Nazi war chants. There aren't any songs which stand up well- not even the bonus tracks.
